The team of about 25 doctoral students, postdocs and senior researchers combine approaches of conservation biology, landscape ecology, and population modelling and genetics to contribute to a sound scientific basis for the conservation and sustainable management of wildlife and its habitats. The Chair is hosting the DFG Research Training Group ConFoBi, which combines multi-scale ecological studies on forest biodiversity with economic and social science studies of biodiversity conservation to investigate how conservation can be effectively integrated in forest management (for details see www.confobi.uni-freiburg.de ). The Chair also has established research cooperations with several European National Parks. The tasks of the Chair further include the teaching of undergraduate and graduate students in conservation biology, wildlife ecology and wildlife management. To complement the wildlife team, a DFG-funded full-time postdoctoral position will be available from 1 September 2021 (earlier start possible) until 30 June 2025. The successful candidate will contribute to the Chair's research programme and will be given the opportunity to developing his/her own research profile. For this position, we seek an animal ecologist with very good statistical knowledge, and recognized research experience in the field of Human Impacts on Wildlife . Topics of particular interest are Non-lethal effects of Hunting , and/or Urban Wildlife Ecology but other research interest will also be considered. Some of our current research (via doctoral studies) explores the effects of hunting on behaviour and social organisation of different wildlife species, and addresses issues of urban wildlife ecology and management. In addition, the Chair has developed a Citizen-Science-platform (https://bw.wildenachbarn.de/) and a handbook on urban wildlife management ( https://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/166825 ). The postdoctoral researcher is expected to strengthen at least one of these scientifically attractive but also societally relevant fields of research, in close cooperation with other team members and cooperation partners. The tasks of the postdoctoral researcher include: Initiating, developing and leading third-party funded research projects in the field of Human Impacts on Wildlife, supervising students at BSc, MSc, and PhD levels, particularly in questions of study design and data analysis, and statistical advice for all wildlife team members. In addition, we expect active participation in activities and events of the wildlife team, such as seminars, workshops, jour fixe, symposia, etc. The successful candidate should also be willing to temporarily contribute to the Chair's BSc- and MSc-level teaching of wildlife ecology and wildlife management. Applicants are expected to hold a PhD degree or equivalent in animal ecology, wildlife sciences, behavioural ecology, or similar; additional training as postdoctoral fellow are an advantage. Strong conceptual and analytical abilities including excellent skills in various methods, such as spatial and/or Bayesian statistics, and command of R, are central for the position. We also expect advanced writing skills, as evidenced by an excellent scientific publication record, International working experience is advantageous. We seek an enthusiastic, independent, and self-motivated team player who works in a structured manner and has excellent communication and organizational skills. The postdoctoral researcher must be fluent in spoken and written English; proficiency in German is an advantage. The successful applicant will be supported in his/her individual career plans, and will be given the possibility to complete the habilitation degree, i.e. the formal requirement for a professorship in parts of central Europe.
